WebReed switches are normally operated with a magnet, but in a reed relay current flows through the coil to create a magnetic field and close the reed switch. Reed relays generally have higher coil resistances than standard relays (1000 for example) and a wide range of supply voltages (9-20V for example). Reed switches have been manufactured since the 1930s. Compared with armature-based relays, reed relays can switch much faster, as the moving parts are small and lightweight, although switch bounce is still present. Also, they require less operating power and have lower contact capacitance. See more A reed relay is a type of relay that uses an electromagnet to control one or more reed switches. The contacts are of magnetic material and the electromagnet acts directly on them without requiring an armature to move … See more A few million reed relays were used from the 1930s to the 1960s for memory functions in Bell System electromechanical telephone exchanges. … See more Reed arrays passed out of use in the mid-1990s, being unnecessary in digital telephone systems such as DMS-100 and 5ESS switch. WebApr 14, 2024 · Reed switches have a bounce/settling time that needs to be considered. Reed switches use no power in an open state. Reed switches are binary devices; they cannot tell between magnetic north and south poles. Hall effect sensors are digital devices; they do not experience a physical contact bounce. Hall effect sensors constantly drain a small ... WebFeb 6, 2009 · The reed switch is positioned next to the train track and a little magnet is fitted to the side of the train.
